2. Argentina – Korea and Japan 2002
Argentina are always favorites heading into the World Cup. After all who would not consider Argentina favorites at that time when they had the likes of Hernan Crespo, Gabriel Batistuta, Javier Zanetti and Juan Veron. They shocked the world of football when they were knocked out in the group stage and yet everyone expected them to go further.
They had a group which consisted of Nigeria, England and Sweden and many fans would at least expect them to go further in the competition considering their main rival in that group was England. Marcelo Bielsa’s men could hardly beat Nigeria, lost to England and tied with Sweden.
They made 4 points and their World Cup dream was over and they continued their drought of not winning a World Cup since 1986 when the Ablecieste defeated West Germany 3-2 to triumph in Mexico and win their second World Cup.
