How the US Womens team face off against group opponents
United States Womens National Team have found out their group for the upcoming World Cup in New Zealand/Australia. The World Champions will be facing Vietnam, Netherlands and the winner of play-off group B. Their third opponent could be Cameroon, Thailand or Portugal depending on who wins the play-off game. USWNT have a relatively manageable group and should be able to ease past their group. Group E will be a rematch between the United States Womens National Team and Holland who faced off in the final in 2019. This match between the two teams ended 2-0 in favor of the Americans who won their second consecutive World Cup. The Americans will be looking to get back on track after losing their last two games against England and Spain.
The potential team to cause an upset
USWNT’s first opponent in next year’s World Cup is Vietnam. This Vietnam’s first ever World Cup and they will be poised to take on the challenge of facing the USWNT and Holland. They go into this tournament as major underdogs and that it really what motivates them. Vietnam disappointed in their last two games where they lost to Philippines and Myanmar conceding eight and scoring three. Despite their disappointing form they won 11 out 19 games this whole year including beating South Korea which was an impressive achievement. This motivates Asian minnows even more to go into their first World Cup and cause an upset.
A rematch made in heaven
The USWNT’s second opposition will be Holland. Holland will be coming into their match against the USWNT in the second round seeking revenge. Their defeat against the Americans still leaves a bitter taste in their mouth. They will want to put their past aside by showing that history is history by overcoming the American giants. Netherlands have been on and off this year winning nine, drawing two and losing 4. One of their highs is beating Portugal 3-2 and beating Cyprus 12-0. One of their lows however is losing to the Three Lions 5-1. Nonetheless the USWNT have Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd all at their disposal. They will be hoping that they can guide the USWNT past the group and to their third consecutive World Cup triumph.
