We are officially halfway through the FIFA World Cup. Yet another round is in the books and we are approaching the crucial part of the group stage.
There has been plenty of exciting action with lots of goals and upsets as well. So which teams will be able to progress to the next round. They are a number of games to look forward to for the next game. The main focus for now is on the highlights of round 2 and the most exciting games that took place in round 2.
Spain and Germany, the most exciting game in the first round of the World Cup
The first most exciting game was Spain vs Germany. This was arguably the biggest game of the whole group stage considering the history and the teams both these teams have.
This was a game Germany had to win or draw or else they would be eliminated yet again in the group stages. Germany was nervous as Spain took the lead through Alvaro Morata to put La Roja of qualifying for the next round. Niclas Fullkburg equalized with seven minutes to go to save Germany and give them a chance to make it to the next round.
This was a game that could have given more than it did considering the players that both teams have. If Germany beats Costa Rica they will advance however they must be weary as they were shocked by Japan. Whereas in Spain’s case they should be able to handle Japan.
Portugal is in the round of 16, Uruguay almost out of the tournament
The next big game was Portugal vs Uruguay which was arguably the match of the group. Before the World Cup this was dubbed as the clash that would settle who came on top in the group. Portugal edged Uruguay 2-0 in what was an interesting game thanks to a brace from Bruno Fernandes. This game leaves Uruguay desperately needing a win or they will be sent home packing.
On the other hand Portugal’s win meant they qualified for the Last 16 and will hope to beat South Korea in order to top their group. Uruguay faces a repeat of the 2010 World Cup where they robbed Ghana from making history. Ghana will be motivated to face Uruguay and will hope to knock them out.
France shines against Denmark
The third biggest game was France and Denmark. These are the two biggest teams in Group D and this clash was dubbed as the biggest game in Group D. Although Denmark were underdogs for this match they had beaten France twice in a row before this clash.
Denmark was confident before this match knowing their record in recent games against France. France took the lead through non other than Kylian Mbappe. Andreas Christensen equalized in the 68th minute for Denmark to give them a chance of pulling a shock on Les Bleus again.
Mbappe took away their hope as he scored to give France the lead again. France’s victory made them the first team since Brazil to make the Last 16 after winning the World Cup. They face Tunisia in the next game and they will hope to win so that they can secure all nine points.
