Spain is a nation full of talented strikers which makes it even more difficult to call players up. They are many talented forwards such as Aspas, Iglesias, Juanmi and even Gerard Moreno did not make the cut. However Alvaro Morata made the cut yet he scored significantly less goals than all his other competitors.
Iglesias has eight goals and Aspas has seven in 14 matches whereas Morata has five. Gerard Moreno hit 30 goals in the 2020-21 season helping Villarreal to a Europa League which is their first ever title.
So the real question is if they are other strikers scoring more goals than Morata why does he get called ahead of them. Futbol Mundial brings you the main reasons why Morata is a better pick than Iglesias, Aspas, Juanmi or Moreno.
Morata’s experience is one to bet on
The first reason why Morata is picked ahead of his fellow compatriots is experience. The Spaniard has represented the Spain national football team since 2014 which means he knows how they play and knows their system better.
He has netted 28 goals since starting and he has 58 appearances. Alvaro Morata played in three major tournaments which were two Euro’s and he is currently playing in his first World Cup.
He scored three goals each in the Euros he played and even guided Spain to the Euro semifinals. Moreno played his first game in 2019 five years after Morata and Iglesias has played one game for Spain which was this year.
Whereas Juanmi made his debut in 2015 only playing one game and Aspas made his debut at 29 in 2016. All of this further proves that Morata is the best candidate for Spain.
Morata’s performance against big teams makes him a better candidate for the role
The second reason Morata knows how to show up when it matters. Iglesias, Moreno, Juanmi and Aspas are all good at scoring in La Liga but Morata knows how to score against the big teams.
Morata scored a couple of goals over two legs to knock out Real Madrid as well as equalizing against Barcelona in the final.
Morata has also scored against several big national teams like Italy in the Euro semis and Germany and Spain in the Nations League. In the 2016-17 La Liga season Morata had the second highest goal ratio just falling short behind Messi.
Although he was a flop in England he scored against Manchester United and Arsenal. He also scored the winner against Liverpool to knock them out of the Champions League. To add on to everything Morata even had a hat trick against Barcelona ruled out.
