A match that delivered very little
Paris Saint Germain vs Bayern Munich was arguably the match to watch of the Round of 16. When you have arguably some of the worlds best soccer players on the same pitch you have to expect a lot out of the match. This was a match that undelivered as the score was only 1-0 in favor of Bayern. However a number of key players were not at their best after just returning from injury like Mbappe, Messi, Verratti and Müller.
What can PSG learn from this defeat
PSG will definitely be kicking themselves as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the German Champions Bayern Munich. It was their third consecutive defeat as they lost to Marseille, Monaco and now Bayern. They have now lost four out of their last 10 games since returning from the Christmas break. PSG will be looking to turn their season around if they are to win their first ever Champions League. This was a game that PSG could have definitely won if luck was on their side. Mbappe had two goals ruled out and Messi had missed a big chance in the 83rd minute. PSG will be hoping to bounce back against Lille this weekend with a commanding victory to put their three straight defeats behind them.
Bayern have one foot in the quarter finals
Bayern will be confident going into their clash with Mönchengladbach knowing that they have the edge over PSG in the Champions League. Bayern’s season also has not been the best however it has been better than that of PSG’s. They came first in their Champions League group without losing or drawing. This Bayern side have a lot of people thinking they could go all the way to glory. It was a game where they frustrated PSG and managed to have one foot in the quarterfinals. It was not a walk in the park for Bayern in the closing minutes PSG’s attack stepped up. Two offside goals from Mbappe and a Messi chance could have turned the game on its head.
Both teams go into this with nothing to lose
Despite taking the advantage going into the second leg and being at home this clash is far from over. PSG will have nothing to lose and will have all their key players at their disposal. A 1-0 deficit is very reversable and Bayern’s defence will have to be at their best and not be shaky. A win for PSG and qualifying for the next round would turn their season around as they have been quite poor in the second half of the season. Whereas Bayern have their eyes on a treble. PSG have spent billions of players in the last few seasons and would be a big disappointment to fall short again.
