Spain win their first trophy in 11 years
Spain defeated managed to hold their nerve to beat Croatia 5-4 on penalties. Dani Carvajal slotted the winner to give Spain their first Nations League. Spain also became the third country ever to win the Nations League since it was established alongside France and Portugal. They were underdogs entering this match and especially when it comes to penalties they were undermined. Croatia lost another final once again as Modric fails to win them an international trophy.
Carvajal holds his nerve to give Spain victory
It was a nerve racking penalty kicks game for both teams as both teams had chances to win the game. Laporte had the chance to win but unfortunately his effort struck the bar. Then Petkovic had his penalty saved which gave Carvajal the opportunity to score. Spain had a chance earlier to wrap up the match but Ansu Fati’s effort was cleared off the line. Jesus Navas became the first player to win the Euros, World Cup and the Nations League. Spain managed to beat Italy by tiny margins thanks to Joselu. Many would argue that they were lucky but Spain regardless are the winners.
Croatia fall short once again
Croatia who entered this match as favorites fell short on penalties. Unfortunately misses from Majer and Petkovic denied the Balkans of their first international trophy. This was set to be Modric’s last dance but he said he will wait until Euro 2024. After their brilliant display vs Holland many tipped them to go all the way and win this one. However it was not to be the case as they fell short to Spain on penalties. Croatia will now be looking on to Euro 2024 as a chance to redeem themselves and it would be a good way for Modric to bow out.
