World Cup Group G introduced in style
World Cup G kicked of with its opener. Sweden and South Africa faced off against one another at Wellington Regional Stadium. Sweden narrowly edged South Africa to get the three points. The Swedes fell behind to South Africa but managed to bounce back and seal the win with a 90 minute winner from Amanda Ilestedt. Heartbreak for Banyana Banyana
South Africa suffered a heartbreaking defeat after taking the lead against 2019 World Cup semi-finalists. Maiaga had opened the scoring in the match that saw South Africa lose their lead to Sweden. South Africa managed to qualify for their second straight World Cup after they won the AFCON in 2022. Banyana Banyana had a chance to go ahead earlier on in the first half as Refiloe Jane’s effort from 40 yards ending on the roof of the net. Unfortunately for South Africa Magaia went off injured shortly after scoring. Banyana Banyana will now have to shift their focus on their clashes against Italy and Argentina.
Ilestedt to the rescue for Sweden
3rd ranked Sweden will be relieved to have come away with the victory against South Africa in the World Cup. The South Africans definitely had Sweden panicking in some moments of the match. Rolfo managed to spare Sweden’s blushes as she managed to put the ball in the back of the net 17 minutes later. Amanda Ilestedt then got the all important goal as Sweden survived the South African scare. Sweden will now be looking on to their games against Italy and Argentina as they try to top their group. Sweden had an amazing run last World Cup only to be defeated by Holland in the semi finals last World Cup.
