Mexico manage to edge Panama by a single goal to win their 9th Gold Cup. El Tri successfully denied Los Canaleros who have never won the Gold Cup in their history. Many Mexican fans will feel that their Gold Cup victory was much needed. Mexico bowed out of the group stage in the World Cup in Qatar. However it will feel like a distant memory as El Tri have managed to right their wrongs. Mexico avoided facing USA as Panama defeated them on penalties in the final. El Tri now goes two ahead of their fierce rivals in terms of Gold Cup wins. Despite El Tri having a goal ruled out they never let that stop them from getting a goal. It was a Gold Cup victory well earned as Mexico dominated Panama on all fronts.
Panama fall short after an impressive tournament
Panama will not be too hard on themselves after this defeat against Mexico in the Gold Cup final. They managed to do something nobody ever thought possible which was to eliminate the USMNT. Los Canaleros are yet to register any international trophy in their history. Panama had their fare share of chances early on in the Gold Cup final. The closest one came as Diaz was through on goal however Montes made what was a game winning tackle. Memo Ochoa managed to also make a brilliant save right on the cusp of half-time. Panama still managed to threaten Mexico in the second half however they will regret their missed chances as it costed them the Gold Cup.
