Colombia fail to hold on to their lead
It was a heartbreaking result for Colombia against England after such a great World Cup run. Las Caferatas made history in Australia as they narrowly beat a defensive Jamaica team to reach their first ever quarterfinal. Colombia had taken the lead against England as Santos caught Earps off guard by giving her the impression that she would cross. On the cusp of halftime Colombia surrendered their lead through poor handling from Perez which got England back in the game. Then in the 63rd minute England netted the winner which would eliminate Colombia. For Colombia especially after taking the lead then making the error they will be kicking themselves for not reaching the semifinals.
Three Lionesses march on to the semis
England avoided a scare from Colombia as they came back from behind to advance to their second straight semifinal. Lauren Hemp took advantage of Catalina Perez’s poor ball handling and got the Three Lionesses back into the game. Alessia Russo then gave England the lead thanks to a brilliant strike. Bedoya Durango then forced a great save from Mary Earps to keep them in front. England will now go on to face hosts Australia in their quest to win their first ever World Cup. Lauren James will still be missing from that game but would play one more game regardless of if they reach the final or not. Despite Colombia taking the lead if you make an error against quality opposition you get punished and that is exactly what happened.
