USMNT: Pochettino demands character now

Pochettino

Following a painful 1-0 loss to Panama that ended the United States’ title defense in the Concacaf Nations League, head coach Mauricio Pochettino addressed the media ahead of Sunday’s third-place match against Canada, calling on his players to respond with «character, bravery, and risk.»

“What we want to see is the same level of concentration and mental strength in every match, official or not,” Pochettino said Saturday. “Sunday’s game will be important to see how we react. We need to show character… It’s not just about the result, it’s also about improving our performance.”

The USMNT, who were heavily favored to reach the final for a fourth straight time, have been under sharp criticism from both local and international press, especially after failing to create scoring chances against Panama. The response against Canada now becomes a matter of pride — and pressure.

Focus on Gio Reyna and mentality

While Pochettino did not single out players, his comments about midfielder Gio Reyna resonated strongly after being published in outlets such as the Philadelphia Inquirer. Reyna has struggled to assert himself in recent performances, and the coach acknowledged the intense spotlight the young talent has faced.

“A player like him has been under pressure in recent months, a lot of pressure,” said Pochettino. “That’s not the Gio we want to see — I believe he can do much better.”

Pochettino emphasized the importance of allowing players to make mistakes and learn from them.

“They need to trust they can make mistakes. The real mistake is not trying again. That’s the most important thing,” he stated.

Taking risks and being brave

The Argentine coach spoke openly about the need to take risks and abandon fear on the pitch.

“We want players who take risks — that’s what we love. You can’t impact the game by playing safe. Taking risks is being brave,” he said.

Pochettino also addressed the motivation factor, reminding everyone that representing your country should be reason enough to perform.

“You don’t need extra motivation for this game. It’s about wearing the crest and knowing what that means.”

He admitted that criticisms following the Panama loss were valid, but insisted that only constructive feedback matters moving forward.

“There are always positive and negative comments, but we should focus on the constructive ones,” he said, acknowledging fans’ and media frustration. “I understand the doubts, and that’s okay.”

The USMNT will face Canada on Sunday, March 23rd at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, looking to end the tournament on a high note. For Pochettino, this match isn’t just about third place — it’s about identity, attitude, and proving they still belong at the top of the region
